Thomas Edward Campbell, 77, of Mattawan, passed away Tuesday September 5, 2023 at his home.
He was born July 16, 1946, the son of Harville Lester Campbell and Leona (Kuneke) Campbell.
Tom's life began in Saint Louis, Missouri. From a young age he understood the value of hard work and the reward that comes with it. He started out working in a shoe factory in MO where he was proud to have made custom shoes for some athletes. As the years went on, Tom worked multiple jobs and eventually went to serve in the Army during the Vietnam War. He was a decorated veteran and was part of the Wolf Pack. He recently received a ring from the Army for his service. Among his many jobs, Tom's main career and love was driving bus for Western Michigan University.
His outgoing personality allowed him to walk into a room of strangers and leave with a group of new friends. He was known for his dirty jokes, pulling pranks and humorous birthday cards. At some point, he obtained the nickname "soupy" which came from a combination of his first and last name! Having a generous heart, among many acts of kindness, Tom would always treat his family to Sweetwater Doughnuts at family functions. He would also give his friends cow pies anytime they helped him out. He was an avid dog lover and always had a best friend at his side. Tom's true love and passion was for bikes and motorcycles. He started out with small bikes and as the years went on, he graduated to a Harley. He loved taking bike trips near and far.
On June 26, 1982, he married Diane (Flegel) Campbell who survives.
He is also survived by his three sisters, Marjorie (late Kerry) Lamb, Frances (late Muhinder) Sharma and Martha (late Rick) Thompson, one son, Jeffrey, one daughter, Lori (John), three grandsons, Joseph, Matthew and Nicholas, his brother in law, Jon Flegel, along with many nieces and nephews.
Tom was preceded in death by his sisters, Wanda, Ruth, Florence, Rosemary and Dorothy, and his infant brother, Henry.
