Stephen (Steve) Lytle Lawrence, 75, of Mattawan, passed away Friday, December 29, 2023, at his home in Mattawan.
He was born on May 10, 1948, the first child of Lytle Gene Lawrence and Evelyne Mary (Fuller) Lawrence. While he always wanted a pony, his parents thought it more fun to provide him with three siblings; Cheryl Lawrence, Phyllis Lawrence, and Robert (Mary) Lawrence.
Steve had a wide variety of talents and interests during his life. From attending one of the last one-room schoolhouses (Star School, outside Marcellus, Michigan) as a young boy, to a love of horses, photography, and music, Steve enjoyed the simple pleasures of life.
Steve had a talent for music and loved to play his trumpet. He formed a band with his close friends during High School and they were hired by former Senator. Gary E. Brown to follow him on his campaign tour! Stephen also tutored Schoolcraft students in music. After he graduated from Schoolcraft High School in 1967, he proudly served his country in the United States Army where he served two tours of duty in Germany, as a Personnel Management Specialist, assisting with Logistical Positioning of Personnel and Equipment and other administrative duties. He returned home for a short time to bartend in Schoolcraft (jumping between two competing bars with his younger sister Flip). After he Re-enlisted in the Army for a third tour, Steve was stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado, finally ending his Army career at Fort Huachuca, Phoenix, Arizona. He then worked for North American Title Company in Phoenix for over 30 years, until he retired.
Steve had quite the knack for photography as well. During his time in the military, he spent a lot of time practicing his photography skills. He loved football and always cheered on his favorite team; the Arizona Cardinals. Several years ago, he returned to Michigan to be closer to his family.
Steve enjoyed the simple things in life that revolved around his family. His favorite pastime was staying at home, watching football and America’s Got Talent and visiting with his family.
Steve on occasion would put a pen to paper with humorous notes and letters. i.e. Memories Royal, or "The dog and I knew exactly what was going on when they brought all these extra kids into the house instead of a pony".
He is survived by his sister; Cheryl Lawrence and brother; Robert (Mary) Lawrence and many nieces and nephews.
Stephen was preceded in death by his parents and sister; Phyllis Jean Lawrence.
Family and friends are invited to visit Monday, January 15, 2024, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. at Adams Funeral Home, 502 W. Michigan Ave, Paw Paw, where a memorial service will commence at 3:30 with Rev. Mark Roberts officiating. Stephen will be laid to rest at Bly Cemetery in Marcellus.
