Scott passed away Thursday morning, August 11, 2011 at Bronson Methodist Hospital, Kalamazoo. He was born April 29, 1945 in Paw Paw the son of the late Elliott and Marilyn (Brandt) Smith. He was a 1963 graduate of Paw Paw High School and attended both Central Michigan University and Olivet College. Scott was elected to the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News First Team All-State Basketball team and the only player in Paw Paw history to be so elected. Scott was a playing partner in Pro-Am Golf Tournaments and various southwest Michigan events with golf pro Jack Misuraca. In the spring of 1964 while attending Olivet College Scott was injured in an auto accident and remained a quadriplegic for 47 years until the time of his death. His drive and stamina to survive was due to the excellent care of his parents and later the devotion and attention provided by his care givers, Karen Saffell, Kathy McCostlin and Rachel Krzemen. Surviving are 3 brothers, Thomas (Mary Ellen) Smith of Paw Paw, Barry (Marilyn) Smith of Schoolcraft, and Kelly (Michelle) Smith of Dorr, sister, Pamela (Thomas) Baney of Paw Paw, nieces and nephews, Heidi (Russell) Towle of Orlando, FL, Trevor Smith of Paw Paw, Heather (Stephen) Johnson of San Raphael, CA., Stacey (Jack) Andelman of Marietta, GA, Lindsey (Philip) Gard of Canton, GA, Clint (Elizabeth) Baney of Kalamazoo and Brett (Vicki) Baney of Las Vegas, NV; several great nieces and nephews; and his Aunt Miriam Toren of Cool, CA. Family will receive friends Sunday (8/14) 2 to 4 p.m. at the Adams Funeral Home, Paw Paw where a celebration of life service will be held at 4 p.m. with Pastor Jeff Stephens officiating. Interment will be in Wildey Cemetery, Paw Paw. Memorial contributions may be made to Paw Paw High School Athletic Department care of Paw Paw High School.
