Robert Gordon Mearing, age 96, of Paw Paw, returned home to the Lord on Monday, January 22, 2018 at his home. He was born April 25, 1921 in Bloomingdale to the late Lester and Effie (Beare) Mearing. Robert is survived by his wife Shirley (Shaw) Mearing of Paw Paw, four children, Michael (Jenna) Mearing of Canton, MI, Cheryl Lammers of Paw Paw, Dan (Julie) Lammers of Southfield, Mi, and Doug (Cindy) Lammers of Jackson, MI, ten grandchildren, six great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Mearing, three brothers, Donald, John and Harry Mearing and his sister Frances Duart. Bob was a 1940 graduate of Paw Paw High School, where he was lettering in track and basketball and many times high scorer with 5 or 7 points. Following high school he served on the USS Eberle as a Radar Operator and was part of the Invasion of North Africa, D-Day and serving in the Pacific Theater at the end of World War II. He coached little league baseball in Paw Paw for many years. Bob enjoyed a good game of poker, coin collecting and golfing. He was Paw Paw’s best source for used golf balls. Bob enjoyed working at Heritage Glen Golf Course and at the Paw Paw Shopping Center where he was social chairman giving hugs well into his late 80’s. The family will receive friends on Friday, January 26, 2017 from 4-6 p.m. at the Adams Funeral Home, 502 West Michigan Ave, Paw Paw. Funeral services will follow on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Horace Turner officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Cuddeback Cemetery, Paw Paw. A luncheon will follow the committal service in the Community Room at Berkshire Paw Paw, 308 East Michigan Ave, from 1-3 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to Maple City Veterans Memorial Park.
