Robert A Brooks of Paw Paw, MI passed away on June 19th,2011. Bob as he was known to most everyone was born Dec. 8, 1933 the son of the late John and Thelma Brooks of Covert.
Bob graduated from Covert High School in 1952. He served in the US Navy from 1955 to 1957, followed by four years of inactive reserves. He was honorably discharged from the United States Navy in November of 1961.
Bob attended Greens Barber College in Detroit, followed by a two-year apprenticeship at various barbershops in the area. He passed the Michigan State Boards and obtained his master barber license in 1962. Bob purchased and operated a barbershop in Marcellus for over 30 years, along with a barbershop in Lawton for 21 years. He then barbered part time for Chuck's Barbershop in Paw Paw for a number of years.
His hobbies included gardening, growing vegetables and flowers. He was an avid fishermen, he especially loved fishing for bluegills. He had a great appreciation for nature and wildlife. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. For many years he enjoyed spending winters in Florida with his wife Bev. Bob and Bev also attended the Paw Paw United Methodist church.
Rev. Alvin Jingst married Bob to Beverly Pompey in Hartford at the Federated Church on July 3, 1954. Together they enjoyed traveling on many trips through the U.S., Canada, Eastern and Western Caribbean. He resided in Covert during his school years. After his marriage they settled in Paw Paw where they raised three sons.
In addition to his wife of 57 years, he is survived by his sons, Bryan (Maureen) Brooks of Defiance, OH, Barry Brooks of Lynden, WA. and Bradley (Michelle) Brooks of Lawton; six Grandchildren, Sarah, Jackie, Brandy, Seth, Brandon and Levi. Also surviving are brothers John Brooks of Schoolcraft, Richard (Larue) Brooks of Mountain Home, AR, Franc (Betty) Brooks, of Schoolcraft, MI., Harold (Luann) Brooks of Edwards burg, MI; sisters, Jean (Bill) Connell of South Bend, IN., Wanda (Herb) Story of Buchanan, MI.; a sister-in-law Marcia (John) Molter of Watervliet; a brother-in-law Keith (Cheryl) Pompey of Lawrence; many nieces and nephews.
In keeping with Bob's wishes cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Saturday, June 25th at 10:00 a.m. at the Adams Funeral Home in Paw Paw, with the memorial service following at 11:00 am. Burial of cremains will be at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Lawton. Following burial, family and friends are invited to share in a fellowship luncheon at the Paw Paw United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Paw Paw United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.
