Phillip Brooke Hinderliter died June 3, 2011. Phillip was born February 21, 1936 in Battle Creek, Michigan, the second son of Donald Francis and Zelna Phyllis (Brooke) Hinderliter. He was a resident of the Kalamazoo/Portage area since 1966. He was a 1954 graduate of Nashville High School (now Vermontville Maple Valley). Phil played four years of football, basketball, baseball and track at Nashville and enjoyed watching all sporting events throughout his life. He attended MSU from 1954 to 1957 and received a business degree from A.T.S. in Chicago. He was a veteran for the U.S. Army, serving in the medics at the 5~ Field Hospital in Toul, France, from 1958 to 1960. Phil worked for IPI (International Printing Ink) for two years and Detroit Ball Bearing Company of Michigan for seven years before working 27 1/2 years at the Comstock GM plant. He retired from GM in 1992 and then worked seven years for Kendall Electric, retiring in 1999. Phillip married Mary Lee Listiak, May 25, 1962. He re-married on May 2, 1987, to Berniece "Bunny" Carol Olson. He was a member of Portage Chapel Hill United Methodist Church for many years and enjoyed helping with "Meals On Wheels" deliveries during retirement. Phil's two most favorite pastimes were spending time with his Grandchildren or time in his flower beds. He also enjoyed geneology, stamp collecting, painting. reading, bowling, writing and drawing, arts and crafts, watching all sports and communicating with friends and family on the Internet. Phil's father died in 1982, his mother in 1998, and his wife, Bunny, in 2005. He is survived by his daughter, Katherine (Timothy) Glasscock of Rockford, MI; sons, Kenneth Hinderliter, of Lakeside, CA, and Michael Hinderliter, of Naples, FL; step~daughter, Kimberly (Ronald) Applebey, of Ludington MI; seven grandchildren: Nick Ruggles, of Kalamazoo; Jynell (Clint) Tackett, of Portage, MI; Erica Olson, of Olivet; Jenessa Olson, of Olivet; Morgan (Raveenkumar) Govindasamy, of Charlotte; Corban Olson, of Lawton, and Debra Hinderliter, of Lakeside CA. Also surviving are Phil's brother Stephen B. (Rae) Hinderliter, of Poquoson, VA, and his sister, Lorna Kneeland, of Battle Creek, Ml and their families. He is also survived by one aunt and several cousins, nephews and nieces. Cremation has taken place. Graveside services will be on Saturday, June 11 at the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte, MI at 11:00 a.m. Family and friends will gather immediately following the service for a time of sharing and refreshments at the South Cochran Church of God, 2470 S. Cochran Road, Charlotte. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the organization/charity of your choice.
