Michael Paul Grabbe, 65, of Mattawan, passed away Thursday, June 17, 2021 after a long and arduous battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).
He was born September 7, 1955 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. His parents were the late Paul Frank Grabbe, Jr., and Margaret Mary (Kowalski) Grabbe.
On June 13, 1975 Michael was united in marriage to Joyce Delores Leali who survives. Together they had three children: Clarissa Anne (Charles) Taylor, Paul Andrew (Sara) Grabbe and Jonathon Michael (Dominique) Grabbe. Many nights after work he could be seen at the sports fields watching his kids play or with Boy Scout Troop #172; always willing to lend a hand.
In September 1978, Michael began what would become a 39-year career with the Village of Lawton, including 29 years as the Superintendent of Public Works. He retired in December 2017.
Mike was truly a “Jack of all trades” and prided himself on his ability to repair just about anything. He enjoyed woodworking and would spend many hours in his barn working on projects that he mostly gave away as gifts to family and friends. He played on the Lawton Men’s Thursday Night Golf League for many years, often coming home late because he was having “a beer or two” with his friends who golfed on the league.
Mike especially enjoyed spending time with his friends, Pat and Bill Bremmer. As the children grew there were many camping and fishing adventures with the Bremmer family. In later years he and Joyce would take motorcycle or camping trips with Pat and Bill that sometimes turned into unplanned adventures themselves.
Michael is survived by his wife Joyce, their three children and five grandchildren: (twins) Caleb Lanning Taylor and Morgan Alexis Taylor, Carter Jon Grabbe, Sage Harbor Grabbe and Lillian Sohier Grabbe. He is also survived by his sister, Elizabeth Ann (Bill) Robbins, along with several nieces and nephews and lifelong friends Pat and Bill Bremmer. He was preceded in death by his parents and his infant grandson, Tayden Michael Grabbe.
Family and friends are invited to visit Thursday, July 15, 2021 beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Adams Funeral Home, 502 West Michigan Ave., Paw Paw, where a memorial service will commence at 7:00 p.m. There will be a reception with refreshments immediately following at the funeral home after the service.
