Marie Loraine Cunningham Martinez, mother of two daughters and a son, wife of a loving home, and a friend to many, sadly passed on the 28th of October at Kalamazoo Bronson hospital at the age of 77. She was a tough woman who struggled with multiple health complications this year alone but did so with a smile on her face and without a care in the world. Those who were fortunate enough to have been acquainted with her knew that her infectious humor would often mask the severity of her situations. Even when her back was against the wall she wouldn't yield an inch, but sadly after facing so many hardships she eventually tired and succumbed to complications with her kidneys and breathing. Her presence has been missed every hour since her passing, but surely she is in a better place, free of the pains of this world. Being a faithful Catholic since a young age, there is no doubt she has passed the threshold of corporeal and entered the grand kingdom of her maker.
Marie left behind a wonderful man, a husband of 14 years, Santos Martinez. A wonderful man that could be seen doting over her, every morning they woke up, and every night he returned home. This couple brought a light into their home that shone like a beacon to all those who entered. Her wonderful family consists of her grandchildren Chelsea and Cheyene Alsup, her great grandchild Leonard Castillo, and their Boston terriers Jax and puggle Lou. To say she would be missed would be liken to calling the fresh snow cold to the touch. Marie and Santos were truly a match prized by those in their lives, and even through this mortal separation of their bodies, even now their love remains as it always has, just as the lighthouse will always shine to lead others to safety, they will always shine together.
To speak of her character, there wouldn't be enough ink for the printers, or words to describe the importance she had in her household and in our hearts. The memories we carry of her will carry weight in our minds and be priced higher than the finest silver. As her great grandchild wanders the halls unaware of what has transpired, he will grow up hearing the stories of her life and impact on this family, and grow into a young man with her spirit watching over him. Marie leaves behind her loving family, husband, Santos S. Martinez, two daughters, Jill Marie (Cunningham) Alsup and Julie Ann (Cunningham) Stanfill, one son, James Leroy Cunningham, grandchildren, Chelsea M. Alsup, Cheyenne Skye Alsup, Jessica Cunningham (Patrick), Keith Cunningham, Robbie Cunningham, Brandon Cunningham, Amanda Cunningham and April Cunningham. Also surviving is her aunt, Velma Davis, former husband, Leroy A. Cunningham, and other members of the family including, Juay, Velma, Zosa and Virjian.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, from 2-4 pm, at the Adams Funeral Home, 502 W Michigan Ave, Paw Paw, where funeral services will commence at 4:00 pm, with Rev. Ron Packer officiating. A late luncheon will immediately follow at the Martinez Barn.
