The Lorene Gossett Mohney

Kalamazoo

Lorene left this life and entered heaven with the music of "Marching to the Gates of Heaven" playing, Monday afternoon, January 27, 2014 at Kairos Dwelling, Kalamazoo with her loving family at her side. She was born October 18, 1923 in Hackleburg, AL the daughter of the late William W. and Mary Elizabeth (Kiker) Gossett. She traveled the U.S. as a teen with her parents and siblings. Settling in Lawton to raise her family, she always maintained pride in her Alabama roots. She was married to Buford Harmon Carroll on May 16, 1941 and had three daughters. She was married to Harley C. Mohney on September 22, 1965 whom she dearly loved and enjoyed. She was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, Doc and Delmer Gossett. She was employed at LakeView Community Hospital, Paw Paw and Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo retiring after 38 years nursing service. Lorene lived life as a self-reliant, self-taught, and independent woman. As a seamstress she created dresses for her girls from seed sacks making her patterns from newspapers. From dress maker to quilter she pieced and stitched beautiful quilts from her stash of fabric which seemed to multiply every time she shopped. As she presented her quilt to the person for whom it was made, she glowed with pride that was well deserved. This sassy 90 year old woman sold her Buick Regal last week; did I say independent? Loving her Lord she attended and served on several committees at Westwood Church of God including visiting shut-ins when she delivered the taped sermon of the week. She loved to visit as she loved to talk and share with friends and strangers. Leaving a hole in the hearts of family and many many friends, you know who you are - leaving shoes too big to fill, leaving fabric to be cut and stitched as per her instructions; leaving stories and memories for all who are left here; leaving the best pecan pie recipe and marching into Heaven into the arms of her Lord and Savior. This wonderful woman at 90 years old left us all too soon. Surviving are three daughters: Ellen Janice (Carl) McNett of Grand Junction, MI, Judy Marie Babcock of Vicksburg, MI and Marilyn S. Tolhuizen of Merrillville, IN; grandchildren, Carl Michael "Skip" (Michelle) McNett, Bruce Robert (DeAnna) McNett, Jeffrey Scott McNett, Jayson Babcock, James Henry (Natalie) Tolhuizen III, and Lora Ann Simmons; great grandchildren, Michael, Chris, Lamica, and Lamar Simmons, Justin and Breanna McNett; great great granddaughter, Ella Marie Simmons; sister, Zelmer Mae Ellis of Lake City, FL; sister-in-law: Ardelia Gossett of Starke, FL; numerous nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends Saturday (2/1), 11 a.m. to 12 noon at the Adams Funeral Home, Paw Paw where a memorial service will be held at 12 noon. A light luncheon will be held following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Westwood Church of God.
