Loretta “Lassie” Hackenberg, 92, of Lawton, Passed away September 23, 2020. Heaven gained an angel today, as our mom reunited with our dad, in the early morning hours, at Jackie’s house with grandson Jake by her side.
She was born in East Decatur, on September 27, 1927, the daughter of the late Sam and Mary (Panek) Laskovy. She retired from Welch’s in 1989, after 42 years of service, and is where she started dating Russell. On September 2, 1950, she married Russell Earl Hackenberg. They spent nearly 60 years together, raising 5 children in the process. Surviving are her children, John, Jackie McDowell and Mary (Steve) Nix, all of Lawton. Her five grandchildren include, P.J. (Maki) Chmiel, Amanda (Ben) Hoger, John (Ashley) Hackenberg, Miranda (Dan) McDowell and Jacob (Taylor) McDowell. Lassie was preceded in death by her husband, Russell, her sons, Jerry and Ace, her parents, and sisters, Vicki, Helen, Stella, Lottie, Jenny and brother-in-laws.
She enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking, homemade jellies, bicycle rides, bowling, spoiling grandkids, traveling with Russ to softball and bowling tournaments, working at the American Legion fish fries and just being around people.
She was loved by all who knew her and would go above and beyond to help anyone in need. Her skills in the kitchen were amazing and were enjoyed by all. Pies, banana bread, cookies and famous Texas sheet cake found their way to many grateful mouths in town. Russ would get mad because the boys at the Lawton Public Works barn usually got priority over him. Her dinners were delicious, and the Polish cuisine didn’t come often enough.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 27, 2020 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm, at the Adams Funeral Home, 502 West Michigan Ave., Paw Paw. There will be a Rosary service at 7:30 pm.
