JoAnn (Gentner) Learman, 71, of Decatur, lovingly known to many as "Grandma Jo," passed away peacefully on March 21, 2025. She was born on May 7, 1953, to George and Loretta “Hattie” Gentner and was the youngest of eight children. She spent her early years learning and laughing in a one-room schoolhouse where she developed the strong values and warm heart that would guide her throughout life.
In May 1972, JoAnn married Frederick Learman, and together they raised four daughters. Though their marriage ended in October 1995, they remained connected through their daughters.
In 2001, JoAnn began a relationship with Dan Wydick, with whom she spent her happiest years and played an integral role in his business. With Dan came four bonus children that she embraced as her own.
Her hands were rarely still, as she found joy in baking cookies and creating delicious treats for those she loved. She had a green thumb and could often be found nurturing plants that seemed to flourish under her care. Crocheting was another of her cherished hobbies, and her creations were filled with the same love and warmth. Her collections of butterflies and roosters showcased her appreciation for the whimsy and beauty of the world around her.
Besides attending many sporting events and band concerts for her children and grandchildren, she also volunteered her time. She helped with Girl Scout troops and the Saint Mary’s Catholic School monthly lunch program sponsored by the Knights of Columbus (Paw Paw). Known for her welcoming nature, JoAnn never met a stranger-she introduced herself as “Grandma Jo” to everyone she encountered, spreading love and connection wherever she went.
Surviving are her partner, Dan; four children - Sheli (Derik) Groner, Kristi (Robert) Everhart, Heather (Bob) Kusmack and Lisa (Andrew) Crawley; bonus children - Dustin Wydick, Renee (Tony) Wydick, Laura (Eric) Wydick, and Daniel (Stephanie) Wydick; grandchildren - Seth (Whitney), Grant, Breeana, Brooklynn, Nolan, Kalin, Carlee, Grace, Karter, Alex, Denver, Leighton, Ethan, Bristol, Rhyder, and, Lily; siblings - Richard (Virginia) Gentner, Donna Apisa, Willis Gentner, and Barb Mausolf; numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents, siblings - Dale Gentner, Jack Gentner, and Ann Phillips and granddaughter, Faith.
A celebration of JoAnn’s life will take place April 26, 2025, at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Paw Paw from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to American Cancer Society or Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in her honor.
