James Peter DeGroff, Jr., 97, of Paw Paw, passed away Monday, August 9, 2021 at White Oaks Assisted Living in Lawton.
He was born March 14, 1924 in Watervliet, Michigan, the son of the late James P. DeGroff, Sr., and Maude (Hathaway) DeGroff.
Jim proudly served in the Army during WWII in the 167th Combat Engineers, Patton's Third Army from July 1944 to December 1945 in the European Campaign. He was an avid walker and came in first at many of the grape and Zman walks. He enjoyed fishing and especially spending time at their home in Florida.
On July 12, 1947 he married Marion J. (Geil) DeGroff who preceded in death in 2012.
Jim is survived by his son, James (Pat) DeGroff of Paw Paw, two daughters, Pat (Edward) Dustin of Lawton, and Susan K. Jensen of Traverse City; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, brother, George (Verlie) DeGroff; two sisters, Alice Culver and Doris Wachob.
James was preceded in death by his three brothers and one sister.
There will be a memorial service with military honors held Saturday, August 21, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery, Lawton. A reception will follow at the Adams Funeral Home, Paw Paw, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
