Howard was born in Wabash, Indiana, and moved to Gobles in 1944, where he lived the rest of his life. He graduated from Gobles High School in 1954, and soon after enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in Germany. In 1957 he married Pat (Fair) Huston, who survives. Howard began his career building houses in Gobles with his friend and neighbor Bob Koehn. Together they built the Gobles Post Office. Howard transitioned to a Union Carpenter. As his career progressed, he became a Superintendent, responsible for the construction of many buildings in the Kalamazoo area. He was able to retire in 1998. Howard was a member of the Gobles Pine Grove Fire Department for 32 years and served as Assistant Chief. During retirement Howard could be found in his garage. He always had a project going, rebuilding small engines, building furniture or birdhouses, or just puttering.
In addition to his wife of 66 years, Pat, Howard is survived by his siblings Joe and Joann; children Karen (Don) Poffenberger, Ron Huston, and Gary (Linda) Huston; his grandchildren Jedediah (Melissa) Poffenberger, Nehemiah (Chanel) Poffenberger, Geoffrey Huston, Caitlyn (Scott) VanOcker, Anne Huston, and Catherine Huston; great grandchildren Gavin, Landon, Ezra, Gordon, Vivian and Howard.
In accordance with Howard’s wishes, cremation has taken place, with internment at Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Gobles Pine Grove Fire Department.
