George Maier, age 93, passed away Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at his home in Oviedo, FL. George was born April 19, 1924 in Aurora, IL the son of the late John and Flora (Matea) Maier. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army in the European Theater and the Battle of the Bulge. He was employed as a Jewel Food Store manager for 33 years in Illinois. George was a Past Commander of the American Legion Post 84 in Batavia, IL, where he was also District Chairman of the American Legion Baseball 11th District in 1952 – 1953. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church Paw Paw, and Kids at Heart seniors, AARP, Cass County Parks Advisory Board, Scottish Caledonians of Kalamazoo, Life Member of the American Legion, McGowan-Johnson Post 68, Paw Paw and a Charter Member of the Past Commanders Club of Post 68. George was also a member of the committee that organized and built Maple City Veteran Memorial Park, Paw Paw. On December 30, 1977 in Bensenville, IL, George was united in marriage to Nancy J. Mars who survives. Also surviving are a dear sister, Helen (Steve) Stanoy, two special sons, Peter A. Mars and Robert D. Mars, special daughter, Wendy L. Silenzi; 12 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters. Family will receive friends Friday morning 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Adams Funeral Home, Paw Paw where funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. with Rev. Eric Gledhill of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI with military honors. Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Legion Maple City Veterans Park, Paw Paw.
