Frank L. Waitas, age 85, of Lawton passed away Monday afternoon, June 1, 2015 at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. Frank was born February 21, 1930 in Chicago, IL the son of the late Louis and Thelma (Decker) Waitas. He was a Korean War veteran serving in the U.S. Army. Frank was an elevator service and repairman for Independent Elevator Company for 28 years retiring in 1992. He enjoyed woodworking, building trailers and traveling with his wife. Frank was a nature lover who was able to identify species of birds and animals and was a loving mentor teaching his grandchildren life's lessons. On May 23, 1953 in Paw Paw, Frank was united in marriage to Joan Marie Belanga who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Darcey (Mark) Gauthier of Mass City, MI, Jeanna Ross of Lawton and Lauren (Mitch) Childree of Kingsland, GA; 2 grandchildren, Jennifer Kingge of Tucson, AZ and Angela Provose of Paw Paw; 10 great grandchildren; sister, Leslie (Felton) Key of Lawton; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Juanita Lindauer. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 9, 2015, 11 a.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Lawton with Pastor Wayne McKenney officiating. Interment of cremains with military honors will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Lawton. Memorial contributions may be made to West Michigan Cancer Center, Kalamazoo.
