Miss Emily Dorstewitz, a lovely, gracious soul has passed away at 106 years of age in Kalamazoo , MI on March 14, 2015. She was born in Coloma, MI on June 11, 1908 to Louis and Harriet Dorstewitz and moved to Paw Paw in 1910 with her family. During her growing up years she was an accomplished cello player with the family orchestra. She also excelled in doing needle work and crafts. After graduation from Paw Paw High School in 1926, she attended nursing school at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, MI where she received her RN degree and then moved on to Michigan State University to complete a BS degree in Medical Technology. Her career was spent in the medical field as a research assistant, first in the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois in Champagne-Urbana and then in rheumatoid arthritis research at the University of Michigan. She has spent her retirement years at Friendship Village in Kalamazoo , enjoying travel and volunteer work. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Francis, Elmer and Victor Dorstewitz and nephews, James and Donald Dorstewitz. Surviving are her loving nieces and nephew, Sharon (Don) Jennings, William (Janis) Dorstewitz, Ellen (Edward) Stephenson, Mary (Bob) Cochrane, Sally (Jerry) Cole and Ruth (Jim) Westcott; many grand and great grand nieces and nephews. There will be a family graveside service at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Paw Paw. A celebration of Emily's life will be held Tuesday, April 21st 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Kiva Center of Friendship Village in Kalamazoo. Memorial contributions in memory of Emily may be made to Friendship Village Friends Fund or First Baptist Church in Kalamazoo. Arrangements by Adams Funeral Home, Paw Paw.
