Doris Leone Filer, age 81, formerly of Lawrence, Michigan, passed away on June 29, 2023, at Adler Center for Caring in Aldie, Virginia.
Doris was born on April 2, 1942, in Lawrence, Michigan, where she was raised on the family farm by parents Louis and Grace (Hopkins) Robbins. She attended Lawrence schools where she sang in the choir and volunteered in the library. Following high school, Doris attended college and obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Teaching. Doris taught in the public school system until her boys were born. When she was in the midst of her teaching career, she was introduced to a young man named Daniel Filer. Doris and Daniel were subsequently wed on June 19, 1965, and had celebrated 37 years of marriage prior to his death on June 18, 2002.
Doris was passionate about genealogy. She was successful in tracing her family back to the American Revolution, the Mayflower and to the Royal families throughout Europe. She was an Elvis fan and, of course, loved his music and movies. Doris’ love for music also spilled over to her love of playing the piano. Being the talent that she was, Doris also excelled as an artist, often finding inspiration in old photographs of the farm.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Grace Robbins, her spouse, Daniel Victor Filer, siblings Dale and Richard Robbins, as well as her brother-in-law, William Barnes. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, sons, Brian (Courtney) Filer of Oak Hill, Virginia, Andrew (Phung) Filer of Burke, Virginia, along with her wonderful grandchildren: Connor, Lauren, Natalie and Emily (all of Virginia), as well as her beloved sister, Carol Barnes of Paw Paw, Michigan.
The family will greet friends on Wednesday, July 19th, beginning at 1:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service beginning at 2:00 p.m., followed by light refreshments at Adams Funeral Home, 502 West Michigan Ave., Paw Paw. Doris will be interred with her late husband, Daniel, at Hope Cemetery in Texas Township.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the Adler Center for Caring.
