David T. Cornish, age 66, of Lawton passed away suddenly Friday, afternoon August 7, 2015. He was born August 29, 1948 in Kalamazoo, the son of Keith T. and Lorrene E. (Lively) Cornish. David was a graduate of Lawton High School class of 1966 and was drafted into the U.S. Army serving in Vietnam with Company "B" 1st of the 8th, 4th Infantry Division receiving numerous awards including the Bronze Star with "V" devise for valor and the C.I.B. He retired as a Sergeant Major from the U.S. Army Reserves after 26 years. He was employed for 41 years as a branch manager retiring from Fifth Third Bank in Lawton. David served on the Lawton Village Council for 33 years with 27 years as president and chairman on the Fire Board. David was a member of the Lawton Lions Club, member of the Paw Paw Knights of Columbus Council # 3798, was commissioner of the Monday Night Golfing League at Heritage Glen, and timer for the Lawton High School Football games for 25 years. On June 26, 1971 in Paw Paw David was united in marriage to Margaret M. Serdel who survives. Also surviving are 4 children, Jon Cornish of Lawton, Michael (Stephanie Barrett) Cornish (U.S. Army retired) of Fredericksburg, VA., Elizabeth "Betsy" (Lynnsy) Maxwell of Lawton and Susan (Bobby Kusmack) Cornish of Decatur; grandchildren, Dane Maxwell, Megan Maxwell, Kamryn Maxwell, and Jyllian Maxwell; mother: Lorrene Eldean Cornish; sister, Eldean "Gwen" (Timothy) Hultquist of Lawton and her son, Thomas Cornish; several nieces and nephews, and his Yorkie K-9 friend Maggie. He was preceded in death by his father, Keith, aunt, Opal Jillich, nieces, Linda Serrano and Mary Ahrens; brother-in-law, Neil Redmond. Family will receive friends Wednesday, (Aug. 12) 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Adams Funeral Home, Paw Paw where a Rosary will be held Wed. evening at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, 11:00 a.m. at the Lawton Evangelical Mennonite Church. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Lawton with full military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to Lawton Lions Club Scholarship Fund or West Michigan Cancer Center, Kalamazoo.
