Art passed away on Thursday, July 19, 2012 at White Oaks Assisted Living in Lawton, the day after his 90th birthday. Art was born July 18, 1922 in Windber, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Mahlon and Clara Mae (Taney) Horner. Art very proudly served in the United States Army where he was assigned to the Normandy Campaign during WWII. He worked for many years at the Fitzgerald Hardware Store in Walled Lake, MI where he loved meeting and helping new people. When he wasn't working Art enjoyed going to horse races and could talk your ear off about football and past Euchre games the family had played. On July 3, 1950 in Angola, IN Art was united in marriage to his loving wife, Helen (Carr) Horner who preceded him in death in 1993. Art lived many years in Commerce Township and retired to Mt. Plymouth, FL with Helen in 1980. When Helen passed he rejoined his beloved relatives in Windber, PA where he lived with his sister-in-law, Louise (Chipukites) Horner, who survives. In 2004 he moved to Paw Paw to live out his final years with his niece, Debby (Dave) Cole, who also survives. Art is also survived by a great niece, Sheri (Steve) Manning; great great nephew, Riley; great nephew, John Cole, great great niece, Candi (John) Miller. Known by all as "Uncle Art", he is survived by many close nieces and nephews that he loved and valued as his own children. The family would also like to thank Martha Owen, whose special kindness and friendship was highly valued and is someone Art thought very highly of. Per his wishes cremation has taken place and no services are scheduled at this time. Interment will take place at the Commerce Cemetery in Commerce Township, MI. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Elks National Foundation or the Humane Society.
